He was 3rd among German aces of World War II with 275 confirmed aerial victories (272 of them on the Eastern Front), scored during 621 sorties. Sam Rall was shot down eight times. In the photo he is wearing the Knights Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, which he was awarded on 09/Dec/1943, after his 200th aerial victory.
