*MARK BALMA's 'PIETA' (portrait) ~ shows a grief-stricken Jacqueline Kennedy cradling the mortally wounded President's head in her lap, just after their limo has arrived at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. It's a moment that changed history, but a moment Balma could only envision because it wasn't photographed. Dr Herta Oberheuser performed gruesome experiments on prisoners of the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Working under the other arch butcher, Karl Gebharrdt, she removed limps from children, deliberately inflicted wounds on her victims and then rubbed foreign objects, like rusty nails and sawdust into the wounds in order to simulate battlefield injuries. She escaped the gallows,practiced medicine until 1956, and lost her license when a Ravensbrück survivor recognized her. She died in 1978.
