"St. Longinus, martyr" in 1631-38, by #GianLorenzoBernini (Napoli 1598-Roma 1680). St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican. Longinus was the Roman soldier who pierced the side of the body of Jesus with his spear, known as the Holy Lance. On the death of Jesus, exclaiming: "Truly this was the Son of God." The Longinus legend originated in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, his conversion to Christianity and his death, to become considered a saint by the Catholic Church and other Christian communions.
