SS La Bourgogne era un francés trasatlántico , que se hundió en 1898, con la pérdida de 549 vidas. En el momento de este hundimiento fue infame, porque sólo el 13% de los pasajeros sobrevivieron, mientras que el 48% de la tripulación lo hizo .El 4 de julio 1898, poco antes de las cinco de la mañana La Bourgogne chocó con el barco de vela británico Cromartyshire a unas 60 millas náuticas (69 millas; 110 kilómetros) al sur de la isla de Sable durante una niebla densa.

On July 4, 1898 shortly before 5 a.m., the French liner 'La Bourgogne' collided with the British sailing ship 'Cromartyshire' about 70 mi. south of Sable Island, Nova Scotia, during a dense fog. Most passengers were asleep in their compartments. As the ship started to list, the crew began to panic, rushing for lifeboats without assisting the passengers. 'La Bourgogne' sank just over half an hour, killing 549 people. Nearly 50% of the survivors were the crew.
