Tomb of Darius l the Great, reign 521-486 BCE. The Achaemenid dynasty or  the Persian Empire (not the same lineage as Islamic Persia) extended from Egypt in the west to the Indus River in the east. The Royal Road connected 111 stations to each other. The major satrapies or provinces of his Empire were connected to the center at Persepolis, in the Fars Province of present-day Iran.
