The Spaniards returned a year after being driven away, and sieged Tenochtitlán for 90 days. On August 13, 1521, Cuauhtémoc was captured by Cortés while quietly fleeing with his family. When faced with the Spaniard, Cuauhtémoc handed him a knife and told Cortés that he could do as he pleased with it, death to the tlatoani being the better course of action. Cortés wasn't interested in Cuauhtémoc's death at the moment, and had him tortured to reveal the whereabouts of the mythic Aztec treasure.
