St. Catherine of Alexandria was a virgin martyr who died in the early 4th century. As a young adult, she visited the roman emperor Maxentius to convince him of the error in persecuting Christians. He in return ordered the best pagan philosophers to dispute with her, but Catherine won the debate and her adversaries, conquered by her eloquence, declared themselves Christians.
