January 15, 1815: Death of Lady Hamilton. Emma Hamilton is known chiefly for her scandalous affair with Lord Nelson, but she had quite a wild youth. She posed and danced naked, and was the mistress of a succession of wealthy and titled men before settling down with Lord Hamilton, who respected Nelson and apparently encouraged his wife's affair. When Nelson died in battle, Emma was distraught: "I believe I gave a scream and fell back, and for ten hours I could neither speak nor shed a tear."
