The tiny kingdom, squeezed between Baden and Bavaria, once included the towns of Heilbronn and Reutlingen and extended as far south as Lake Constance on the Swiss border. Before the nation that we know as Germany was formed, the political landscape consisted of a patchwork of independent states that were ruled by dukes and kings. By the end of World War I, these royal families had been swept away by history. (Ludwigsburg Palace)
