Michelle Bachelet: b. 1951; Michelle Bachelet is a Chilean Socialist politician who served as President of Chile from 2006 to 2010. She resigned from UN Women in March 2013 to run for a second term as President of Chile, with the support of the Communist Party and the parties that supported her previous presidential term. Bachelet, a physician with studies in military strategy, served as Health Minister and Defense Minister under her predecessor, President Ricardo Lagos.
Dilma Rousseff: b. 1947; Dilma Rousseff is President of Brazil, and the 1st woman to hold the office. As a youth, she joined guerrillas that fought against dictatorship, was jailed, and tortured. After release, she founded the Democratic Labor Party, but later joined the Worker’s Party. President Lula da Silva appointed her Minister of Energy, but a scandal led to the resignation of the Chief of Staff. Rousseff assumed the post, remaining until she ran for President.
