Merida, old and new: Roman bridge and Lusitania bridge. The Roman bridge in Merida, in the Extremadura region of Spain, crosses the Guadiana river. It is the longest of all ancient bridges with a total surviving length of 721m (2,380 feet) across 60 spans. Behind it can be seen the Lusitania bridge which opened in 1992 and was designed by Santiago Calatrava. Until this new bridge opened, the Roman bridge was still used for traffic. Now it is only open to pedestrians and cyclists.
