A Hindu devotee runs over smouldering charcoal during the ritual of Shiva Gajan at Pratapgarh village in Agartala, the capital of northeastern Indian state of Tripura. Devotees believe that by enduring the pain, Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction, will grant their prayers. Thousands took part in the month-long festival which culminates with the worship of Shiva on the auspicious day of Chaitra Sankranti, the last day of the Bengali calendar year.
