In her autobiography, she portrayed Gage as an alcoholic parasite who squandered $10 million of her earnings. Gage and Williams separated in 1952 & divorced in April 1959

Hurt's inspiration for the Beulah voice was an African-American woman named Mary who cooked for his family.
