A Flat Calm on a High-Prowed Boat Winston Churchill c. 1925  Churchill was forty before he discovered the pleasures of painting. As he put it: "...experiments with a child's paint-box led me the next morning to produce a complete outfit in oils." Characteristically, Churchill's first word of advice to budding artists was "audacity." He said, "When I get to heaven I mean to spend a considerable portion of my first million years in painting, and so get to the bottom of the subject..."
