Sojourner Truth was an abolitionist and women's rights activist. When she was nine she was separated from her family and sold with a flock of sheep for $100. Her owner was cruel and beat her daily. Around 1815, Truth met and fell in love with a slave named Robert from a neighboring farm. Robert's owner forbade the relationship. Robert was savagely beaten and Truth never saw him again, learning later he died from those injuries. Late in 1826, Truth escaped to freedom with her infant daughter.
