This tree, an example of the species Cariniana legalis named Patriarca da Floresta in Brazil, is estimated to be about 3,000 years old, making it the oldest non-conifer in Brazil. The tree is believed to be sacred, but its species is widely threatened due to forest clearing in Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela. | Passiflora parritae | This was, for a time, the only clone of this plant in existence, after the other seedlings died in the summer heat of the Missouri Botanical Garden and the original Colombian plant was killed. Recently additional seedlings have come out of Colombia and there are a few in the trade here in San Francisco. This is a truly spectacular flower in all respects.
