Lake Oberon, Tasmania - National Geographic Travel Daily Photo

March 15, 2014. Lake Oberon, Tasmania, Photograph by Ashley Whitworth, Alamy. Via dei Servi, Florence - National Geographic Travel Daily Photo

Like a presiding spirit, the cathedral—duomo in Italian—of Santa Maria del Fiore keeps watch over the streetscapes of Florence, including this block of Via dei Servi, a few hundred yards northeast of the church. Begun in the medieval era, in 1296, the Florence cathedral is mostly Gothic, with pointed arches and angular vertical spaces. Photograph by Dave Yoder, March 17, 2014

Kosrae, Micronesia - National Geographic Travel Daily Photo

Traditional methods hang on in Kosrae, Micronesia, where fishermen in outrigger canoes make use of palm-frond torches and long-handled nets. The light attracts curious fish—which end up in the anglers' nets. The island of Kosrae (the easternmost of the Caroline Islands) is part of the state of Kosrae, one of four that make up Micronesia. The western Pacific nation is home to just over 100,000 people. Photograph by David Boyer, National Geographic, September 25, 2014
