Ferdinand Cheval was a French postman who spent thirty-three years of his life building Le Palais idéal (the "Ideal Palace") in Hauterives For thirty-three years, he picked up stones during his daily mail round and carried them home to build the Palais idéal. His story of why he built this house is a charming one. He also built a mausoleum where he was buried about a year after it was finished.
