Countess Erzsébet Báthory de Ecsed (1560 - 1614), was a countess from the renowned Báthory family of nobility in the Kingdom of Hungary. She has been labelled the most prolific female serial killer in history and is remembered as the "Blood Countess".
Known to History as the “Blood Countess,” Countess Elizabeth Báthory was accused, along with 4 accomplices, of killing over 600 women, mostly virgins, so she could bathe in their blood. Though never formally tried, Báthory was convicted of killing 80 young women, and as punishment was walled into a section of the castle under house arrest. She died four years later. She is regarded as the most prolific female serial killer the world has ever known.
