Herm of Hermes Roman, marble, AD 50-100 Tag: The head of Hermes (god of travel and commerce) is set on top of a square pillar, forming a type of statue called a herm. Herms were placed at boundaries, crossroads, and thresholds of houses. This Roman sculpture is modeled after the Hermes Propyleia, a famous herm carved by the Greek sculptor Alkamenes in 430-420 BC. Alkamenes' herm stood at the entrance of the Acropolis in Athens as a protective device.
