The complementary colour relationship involves hues that are directly opposite on the colour wheel (eg. green + red, blue + orange, yellow + purple). This is the colour relationship with the highest contrast; this allows for attention to be drawn easily to designs it is used in. The opposition of these colours can be harder to balance than schemes such as monochromatic and analogous colours.
