The British never ruled Kashmir, it was already ruled by a Hindu Maharaja, so the British weren't allowed to build properties—instead they built houseboats. Today there are about 2,500 houseboats on Dal and Nagin lakes, which vary from small and cozy one-bedroom boats to seven-bedroom houseboats, beautifully carved, made of luxury cedar pine.
