There are dominance hierarchies for both male and female baboons. Males aggressively compete for higher status and for dominant females. Males that are higher ranked establish stronger consortships causing higher mating success. Female baboons receive ranking just below their mother and these rankings within group are stable for many generations. Higher ranking females reproduce earlier in life; get better food sources and access to males.
