Vikings: Statue of Ingolfur Arnarson the #Viking. Ingólfur Arnarson was the first Nordic settler of #Iceland. He built his home in (and gave name to ) Reykjavík in the year 874. Made by Einar Jónsson in 1924 and located on Arnarhóll, Reykjavík.
Norwegian archeologist Anne Stine Moe Ingstad (1918-1997) discovered the remains of a Norse settlement in Newfoundland and was author of The Norse Discovery of America (1977). In this photograph distributed by the National Geographic Society, Ingstad "examines a fire pit at the site of what is believed to be a Norse house dating from about A.D. 1000".
