SIESTAS- Your kindergarten teacher may be onto something- napping is good for you. Any time you can rest and recharge is good, but a study by the University of Athens Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health found that people who took naps had lower coronary mortality than those who didn't. The researchers defined "regular" naps as the kind that took place at least three times a week for about 30 minutes. #livelongerbetter #bluezones #siesta
What's Kamada's secret to living to age 102? "It took me a long time to realize that beauty is within. It comes from not worrying so much about your own problems. Sometimes you can best take care of yourself by taking care of others. " "Eat your vegetables, have a positive outlook, be kind to people, and smile" #BlueZones #Okinawa
BLIND HOSPITALITY-- I spent two days with this 103 year old woman. She cooked her own food, kept house and washed her own dishes (and while she was at it, she'd pull out her dentures and scrub them too). She ate miso soup and diakon for breakfast, drank 5 cups of tea daily and napped. She spent 15 mins daily to remember her ancestors. From her, I got a glimpse of the extreme of human longevity. We had no mutual language but she hosted me for two days and smiled the whole time
OWN A DOG: Pets make for great companions and encourage you to walk or run. Researchers found that if you own a pet, you get over five hours of exercise a week without a lot of added effort. In fact, studies have shown that dog owners have lower rates of health problems compared to those who don’t own a dog. INVEST IN YOUR PARTNER -- Married people live up to 6 years longer than their single, divorced or widowed counterparts. A spouse is so important that when one dies after more than 50 years of marriage, the surviving spouse has a life expectancy of less than a year. This Okinawan couple, where women live longest in the world, has been married 70 years. #BlueZones
