Halite, Sylvite

Halite. The color is caused by the radiation of Potasium-40 naturally present within the surrounding sylvite. The radiation displaces electrons from chlorine ions, forming a structural defect called a F-center, which colors the halite brown to yellow. Over time the electrons are attracted to positively charged sodium ions and combine themselves with the ions to form sodium metal, as aggregates, which give the halite its blue color.
