Medieval Chests - Coffre à pentures de fer forgé. Strasbourg, église Saint-Thomas. - This is a 14th century chest from the Saint Thomas church in Strasbourg. It has strap hinges and decorations made from iron forge work.
This little box represents all that is left of the religious world in Stirling in the 14th-15th c. when Stirling was the centre of religious and political life. The town had 3 monastic settlements that served the needs of the Kings of Scotland and their retinue.The box is made of pine and painted on the outside with flowers. Interior is lined with 12 sheets from a printed latin book of hours of c.a.1600's. The box came from Stirling Burgh to the museum in the early 20th cent.
