This picture shows the general features of bones. Bone is a connective tissue with a matrix hardened by minerals. Bones provide support, protection (like the ribs protect the heart), and aid in blood formation. Bone remodels itself throughout life. The periosteum is connective tissue that surrounds the bone. Once the epiphyseal plate stops growing it turns into a line. (Picture obtained from McGraw-Hill Connect). This picture shows the general anatomy of a long bone. It is composed of an outer shell called dense bone (cortical bone). Inside is the marrow cavity or medullary cavity which houses the bone marrow. At the ends of the bone the space has spongy bone as well as some in the shaft. The diaphysis provides leverage while the epiphysis is enlarged to add strength to the joint. The joint surface has articular cartilage which allows for joint movement.
