Santa Maria is the island of the firsts. It was the first island to be formed in the Azores archipelago, the first to be discovered by the Portuguese explorers and Vila do Porto, the capital town, was also the first to be founded (in the 1430s). Together with Sao Miguel, it forms the Eastern Group of the Azores archipelago. Dryer and warmer weather than on the neighbouring islands and the possibility to make use of it on the white sand beaches are the main advantages that attract tourists.
