This story goes back to the 1960s, with the rise of a radical Puerto Rican nationalist group known as the Young Lords.

About Puerto Rico. It's accurate, except for the name. The original name was Borikén, the natives' name for the Island. The Spaniards renamed it la Isla de San Juan Bautista, or the Island of St. John the Baptist. Since all Spanish ships, leaving America full of gold, had to stop in the island for staples for their long voyage to Spain, the name was eventually changed to Puerto Rico or Rich Port, for all the gold that arrived in the Island.

Early 1900s, Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico. It's a metropolis now (2016) but these were small adobe houses with thatched roofs.

The flag of Puerto Rico flies from the head of the Statue of Liberty after 28 Puerto Rican nationals seized Liberty Island on Oct. 26, 1977. She seems to have a sense of humor about it.

This wave of gentrification has caused a dramatic increase in the cost of living on an island where 43% of the population lives below the federal poverty line, according to the U.S. Census
