a patchwork quilt hanging on a clothes line in the grass with trees in the background

For Christmas I gave this quilt to my son and his girlfriend who live with two cats in Chicago. I like the quilting more after washing! This is the second quilt I've made using Rachel's Penny Patch quilt tutorial. The first one I made was in the radiant orchid color theme that was all the rage last year. In selecting the fabrics for this gift, my goal was for a primarily low volume quilt with touches of yellow and blue (colors they've painted their apartment). There are some special fabrics…

a woman standing next to a large quilt

if you think the photo quality on this blog has plummeted, i would agree with you! each of the last few times i've needed to take photos of a quilt finish, i have been rushed, the lighting has been impossible, and my camera has malfunctioned. one of the reasons i blog is because i do enjoy quality photos of my quilting life and the items i make. this is such a disappointment to me, but it is what it is, as my husband would say. the day i put the final stitches into penny patch 2.0 was a…

a patchwork quilt is hanging in the snow

This quilt started from the need to work on something bright and happy during a particularly dreary winter period. I found myself staring at a FQ bundle of Kate Spain's Good Fortune for the solution and focusing on the color purple (or radiant orchid). I blogged about starting this quilt here. The pattern is from Rachel at Stitched in Color's Penny Patch Quilt-Along. Her instructions are excellent and the quilt top was quite straightforward to sew together. A few pictures outside in the…

the quilts are all different colors and patterns

earlier today i pulled out all three versions of the penny patch pattern i've made over the years and gave them a look. then i saw a new version that jolene is making over at blue elephant stitches, and it reminded me that once apon a time (october 2015) i started working on a tutorial for a 3 block version of this pattern. i dug in the blog archives and found this post in my drafts. i had intentions of finishing this as a tutorial someday, but no longer know where i was going with any of…

a quilt hanging on the wall in front of a white wall with an orange, green and

When I saw the quilt along for the 4 Penny Patch, I knew it would make a great gift quilt for my mom. I had some Shelburne Falls by Denyse Schmidt that I had been hoarding and a few of her fabrics from Jo-Ann's that were perfect. I really, really like the way this turned out! I quilted it in a diamond pattern. If I were going to make this one again, I would definitely try a different pattern for that. I think the dogwood flowers that the originial quilt uses might be fun to try. I have never…

a blue vase with flowers on top of a table next to a rug and lamp

For years, I've been interested in Penny Rugs. Their origin dates back to the Civil War era, when homemakers used wool scraps from old clothing, etc. to create mats or rugs. Using coins as templates, they created circles and stitched them with a blanket stitch to a background fabric. They weren't necessarily made as floor rugs, but more often decor coverings for beds, tables, and mantels. Recently, inspired by the blog site of Ashton Publications, I decided to try my hand at making a penny…
