This video demonstrates how to sew a French link stitch, unsupported. The French link is often used in conservation due to its strength and flexibility. In the video, a thick colored, pre-waxed linen thread is used to help emphasize sewing only. During this 3.5-hour workshop, participants will get to learn basic bookbinding skills and how to handcraft an exposed spine book using 3 different stitches - french link stitch, link stitch and kettle stitch. Participants will be able to customise their books by choosing from blank and/or dotted grid pages and from a variety of colours for the cover and thread.

When a book structure calls for tape, linen tape was traditionally used, and today it is still used by most bookbinders and conservationists instead of cotton tape. It's not sticky backed tape like duct or masking, rather, it is basically a narrowish woven fabric, which you sew, and maybe also glue, to the pages when constructing some styles of books.
