The wonderful world of insects contains some of the most bizarre-looking creatures in existence and caterpillars are not an exception. Actually, a caterpillar is a young butterfly or moth that has just hatched out of its egg. Their look varies from scary to cute, but they always grab my attention when I find one in my garden.

Wooly Bear caterpillars always remind me of the fall weeks I spent as a high school counselor at our school district's outdoor school. The kids were always most excited to learn about animals but other than the preserved pelts and a road kill deer that one year we hardly ever got to really see wildlife.
