Dry point is the most direct form of intaglio. The artist simply takes a sharp point and uses it to scratch into the metal plate to create the image. There is quite a variety of tools that can be used for this. Here's a video of Wayne Thiebaud doing that at Crown Point Press. You don't need an x cut express.  You don't need new sheet metals. You don't need chemicals. You don't need drypoint perspex.You don't need etching paper to print on. You can use some or all those things, yes! But you could also use an aluminium drink can, an old craft knife blade (though I do love my little electric engraver as seen in the video), a castor wheel off a chair and some cheap watercolour paper.
