Lotte Laserstein shows herself in a self-portrait with a cat in front of the large studio window on the easel. With her upright posture, and with her head turned, the scrutinizing gaze directed at the viewer and the painting raised at shoulder level, she takes up the type of self-portrait known primarily from the Renaissance and traditionally occupied by men. The artist recalls that the cat, a stray, was given milk and brandy to encourage it to stay for the portrait.

We were delighted to find out that Renaissance era artists created paintings where cats are being fed with a spoon like little babies.
