The American chestnut (castanea dentata) was once one of the predominant tree species on the Eastern seaboard, ranging from Maine to Florida. An estimated 25% of the trees in the forests of Appalachia were American chestnuts, some reaching heights of over 36m, with similar canopy spreads and trunk diameters of 3m or more. Blight-resistant hybrids, the best being with Chinese timber varieties, are now bringing these high quality timber and mast-producing trees back into cultivation. Zone 5-8
