Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, in Great Britain. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London.

In a tradition that traces its roots to the reign of Mary I and the 1605 Gunpowder plot, the streets of Lewes in East Sussex were turned into a procession of flame this evening as part of the town's annual Bonfire Night celebrations. Hundreds of Lewes residents donned period costumes and carried flaming crosses and torches through the streets as thousands looked on.

Guy Fawkes' Catholic Gunpowder Plot - an attempt to blow up England's Houses of Parliament and Protestant King James I on November 5th 1605 - left an enduring legacy in England, though clearly not the one Fawkes had hoped for. Celebrated annually as Guy Fawkes Night/Bonfire Night throughout Great Britain over 400 years later.
