Before & After: A Kitchen Returns to its Retro Roots, use a laminate countertop like Nevermar or Pionite

In most of the renovations we feature here on Apartment Therapy, the homeowners are hoping for a more modern look. It was a little different for Fairfield, Iowa homeowners Lauren and Dennis. After making the initial decision to remodel their kitchen, they decided that what the space really needed was to look older, not younger. So they set about restoring the kitchen of their 1939 home to its former glory — and made some surprising choices along the way.

Congoleum gave Armstrong a run for their money consistently for decades as they both competed for the same flooring market. This kitchen features space to store the "family wagon" used for grocery shopping and hauling tired toddlers. It appears to be a patterned lino rug over linoleum flooring. The ad appeared in Ladies Home Journal.

a painting of an old fashioned kitchen with yellow table cloths and chairs in it

Can't get much more quaint then that. This is a typical farm kitchen dating back I would say to the early 1900's. Bright yellow colors, always cheerful in the mornings. While your waiting for your flap jacks, you can churn some butter right at the table, it's very convenient. * All images © Mike Savad. All rights reserved. a kitchen with white cabinets and red counter tops

When my husband and I started researching our home, we had a strong hunch that our kitchen dated to the 1940s or 1950s. We didn't have any concrete evidence, just a vague conception of what a retro, post-war American kitchen would look like: white cabinets, Formica counters, linoleum floors, cherry red accents, and kitschy wallpaper. In other words, we thought that many 1940s or 1950s kitchens had looked exactly like the kitchen in our new home. It turns out we were right. Here's our…

If your home was built between 1920 and 1930, the original kitchen may have had some of the features below. Mix of full inset and half-overlay door and drawer styles. While still simple, the addition of half-overlay doors and drawer styles added character. Tile counters. Tile countertops were affordable, durable and could add style to […]

an old fashioned kitchen with green and white checkered flooring on the tile floors

The kitchen in this otherwise beautifully intact 1926 home was updated in the 1950's, but lacked the visual charm of the rest of the house. A mid-1920s green and white Wedgewood stove provides the inspiration and colors for this fully modern upgrade with a late '20s to early '30's look. -- from the board "1920s Kitchen remodel with Wedgewood stove"

a kitchen with white cabinets and black and white checkerboard flooring on the walls

While having a “green” kitchen is a desirable trait these days, it had a whole different meaning in the 1940’s. A green floor, green walls and even a green ceiling is what Linn and her husband faced when they purchased their bungalow last year. But after a month of hard work the only green they’ll have to live with now is the envious kind.

the kitchen is clean and ready for us to use

If you have a 1940s house, it most likely falls into one of two categories: Pre-War or Post-War. The 1940s pre-War kitchen borrowed from the ’30s with its cheerful prints and focus on white, sanitary spaces. The post-War kitchen benefited from the huge influx of returning soldiers who got married and set up housekeeping . […]

the kitchen is clean and ready to be used for cooking, baking or other activities

There’s nothing quite as charming as an old country farmhouse. We take you now to the town of Thirsk, located in the beautiful North Yorkshire region of England. This is where veterinary surgeon James Alfred Wight lived, worked, and wrote under the pseudonym of James Herriot.

a kitchen with an old fashioned stove top oven next to a white refrigerator freezer

This suburban kitchen dates from the late 1940s. The area is small and compact with gas and electrical appliances, a free-standing cupboard and a pantry. The electric cooker is a 1935 model and was rented from York City Electricity Department. It was quite common to rent larger domestic appliances, as they were expensive to buy. The kitchen cupboard has a display cabinet at the top, a cutlery drawer, a drop-down work surface with storage space, and an enclosed cupboard at the bottom. This…
