Baby at 8 weeks, still in the womb. This baby is now called a fetus. The little one is about 1/2" long. Heart beats ~150x per minute. Brain waves can be measured. Teeth are beginning to form. Veins are clearly visible through the thin skin. The baby already has its own blood type. The liver is already producing blood cells. There's a lot of growing going on!

A Child is Born: Photographs of the foetus developing in the womb, by Lennart Nilsson
The baby weighs 7.5-9 oz @ 20wk gestation and is ~8.5" long. The baby is starting to grow hair. The little one occasionally hiccups. This is thought to be because of an immature, developing diaphragm. Meconium is starting to accumulate in the bowel. This will be the first "poopy diaper" out in the real world. The baby is covered with a greasy, white substance (vernix caseosa). This substance protects the skin during the long submersion in amniotic fluid.
