Exhibit 72. TAMAGOTCHI 1996. Virtual Pets first appeared in 1986 with a game called Puppy Love for the Apple Mac but it took an egg-shaped video game on a key chain to hit the mainstream. Bandai’s Tamagotchi inverted the typical game mechanic, success is achieved by care rather than violence. As the first mass market virtual companion, it paved the way for virtual pets like Furby’s and the AIBO, and for simulations like the Sims. The constant nurturing is even reminiscent of social networks.
