Portrait of Richard Drake (1535-1603), by John Gower (English, 1540-1596) ~ 1577 ~ National Maritime Museum, Greenwich ~ Drake , was Equerry of the Stable and Groom of the Privy Chamber to Queen Elizabeth I. He also held office as a Member of Parliament and Justice of the Peace. Drake served as factor and prize agent to Sir Francis Drake (to whom he may have been distantly related)
A compendium dial made by Humfrey Cole (circa 1520-1591). One page of this compendium is an equatorial sundial, another is a noctural, another a calendar,another a circumferator, compass, alidade and geometric square. From the different pages it is possible to calculate anything from high and low tides and the phases of the moon to the height of buildings.
