Salvatore Maranzano took over the future Bonanno Family in 1930, after Giuseppe “Joe the Boss” Masseria, leader of the rival Morello Family, forced Cola Schirò to step down. A major gang war soon errupted – the Castellammarese War – as the criminal factions allied with Masseria fought those allied with Maranzano for control of New York.

Salvatore Maranzano took over the future Bonanno Family in 1930, after Giuseppe “Joe the Boss” Masseria, leader of the rival Morello Family, forced Cola Schirò to step down.
