MET

The Execution of Criminals; Slings in Ancient Warfare

"Stauros" Greek word for a pole/stake on which one is impaled (the root verb "stau'ros" is used in the Bible more than 40 times.) This verb means to fence with pales, to form a stockade, or palisade and this was the verb used by the mob calling for Jesus to be impaled. He did not die on a "cross." In several texts, Bible writers use another word for the instrument of Jesus’ death. It is the Greek word xyʹlon. This word simply means “timber “or “a stick, club, or tree.”
