On the morning of March 2, 1865, a small unit of three soldiers were stationed at the Confederate defenses at St. Marks. The old Spanish fort, now San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park, was awaiting an expected invasion. Four days later, troops would engage Confederate forces, including cadets from the West Florida Seminary (now Florida State University) at the Battle of Natural Bridge, reenacted every March at Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park.
