Manticore (Spiderwick) Originally documented in Persia, the feared, man-eating Manticore, or Manticora, has been sighted in places as varied as the jungles of Brazil and Indonesia and, more rarely, the forests of North America and Europe. With the body of a Lion and a tail of poisonous spines that some reports indicate can be shot like arrows, a Manticore is a lethal predator. It eats its victims whole, using its triple rows of teeth, and leaves no bones behind.

What's a Black Panther, Really?

What's a Black Panther, Really? A black jaguar (Panthera onca)crouches in a pool of water in Brazil. Black jaguars are also called black panthers, which is an umbrella term for any big cat with a black coat. The coloring comes from a surplus of melanin, the same pigment responsible for suntans. An animal with the condition is known as "melanistic." In direct sunlight it's spots can be seen as black on black.
