JORGE OTEIZA - (born Oct. 21, 1908, Orio, Spain—died April 9, 2003, San Sebastián, Spain), Basque sculptor who , examined the nature of space and emptiness in monumental minimalist sculptures that were influential in the art world of the mid-20th century. Oteiza began sculpting while studying medicine in Madrid. In 1935–48 he lived in South America, and the pre-Columbian art that he saw there informed his later work.
