NASA History - Making the final crewed landing of the Apollo Program, Apollo 17 touched down on the lunar surface on December 11, 1972, at 2:54 p.m. EST. Along with mission Commander Gene Cernan, Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt guided the Lunar Module Challenger towards the Taurus-Littrow Valley. Schmitt, the only geologist to land on the Moon, and Cernan spent three days on the lunar surface.
