Amy Powers on Instagram: "Here is your approach for dealing with beds that have a lot of weeds: 1. You have to do the work to remove the existing vegetation. 2. Then after all that hard work, you need to immediately mulch with 3 inches deep of shredded hardwood. 3. Then you want to plant immediately afterwards in this bed. Those plants are going to start taking up the resources in the space where these weeds are growing. Native plants are best especially drought tolerant ones because they have such a good healthy root system that it’s very difficult for other aggressive plants to choke them out. The most well-behaved native grasses that are easy to put in place and have a native range through much of central and eastern North America are Little Bluestem Grass, Prairie Dropseed Grass and

In a cottage garden, you want to mix textures, layers and color, to get that lush, romantic sense of abundance💐 🌿Layers: Builds a sense of abundance * Cottage Gardens are all about abundance, layers are the key to achieving that full overflowing look * Layering also helps ensure that something’s always in bloom. * The first layer starts with ground huggers or edgers example is my boxwoods * Second layers are midsize perennials , catmint, saliva & daylily * The third layer or your tall hairy plants, hollyhocks, foxgloves, and shrubs 🌿Texture:Adds depth& in
Courtney Mims | SouthernToATea on Instagram: "I couldn’t keep this secret to myself anymore! I’ll forever have this flower in my landscaping and containers!!! @provenwinners Superbena!!! It’s not to be confused with standard verbena. This hybrid version specially from Proven Winners is unreal!!! It’s the ultimate stunner in the garden with ZERO maintenance!! (So is their supertunia too!) I planted these last year and they are supposed to be annuals in my zone (8A) but omg they made it through our winter! I had them heavily mulched with leaves and they made it! I’m shocked! I planted mine 10” apart to create this continuous hedge and this is the color Stormburst! Here are a few other amazing things about them! 💜 Long blooming period – Blooms from spring through fall without deadheadin
Peri on Instagram: "Have you got any of these in your garden? I’ve only listed perennials here, flowers that truly come back year after year. These really are very low maintenance and easy to grow and once your plants are established, very easy to dig up and divide to make plants. #garden#gardening#cottagegarden#cottagegardens #cottagegardenflowers #gardendesigns #flower #flowersideas #perennialgarden #perennialflowers#gardenlove #flowerlover #zone5b"

This border flowers from spring through to October, works in most garden styles, and keeps looking great with minimal effort. It's all about layering structure, movement, colour, and texture—and these are the plants that make it happen: 🌿 Pittosporum ‘Golf Ball’ – evergreen structure and year-round shape 🌿 Miscanthus ‘Morning Light’ – graceful height and movement 🌿 Carex dipsacea – bronzy, textural contrast at the front 🌿 Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ – bold violet spires and dark stems 🌿 Nepeta ‘Junior Walker’ – lavender-blue flowers and scented foliage 🌿 Erigeron karvinskianus – dainty daisies that bloom for month
Maryland Cottage Garden Design on Instagram: "Time well spent if you love peonies! Did you know you can have peonies from your own garden in July!? You can if you pick and preserve them in the fridge at the right time! Harvest your peonies when buds are slightly open and in that soft, marshmallow stage. Give them a soft squeeze and they’ll feel exactly like a marshmallow. Remove excess foliage and side buds, wrap the ends in damp cloth and plastic to retain moisture, and pop them in the fridge where they won’t be crushed by anything. Check the moisture level every week to ensure they don’t dry out. When you’re ready for another peony fix, take them out, make a new cut, and pop them in water. In a few days they’ll open up and you’ll have a lovely reminder of your spring peony garden! Pe
Resh Gala | Organic Gardener on Instagram: "New Year, Old Soil! Don’t throw away old soil even if it looks dry and dusty. You can easily refresh & reuse it for planting year after year! Simply remove and debris & diseased plant matter, fluff up the top 6 inches of soil and top up with your favorite organic potting soil and organic granular fertilizer! PS: Don’t dig and mix in the fertilizer, simply scratch it into the top 2”-3” as water/rain will help it seep into the root level over time. Frinet Mendoza | Creativa on Instagram: "My most liked Reel of 2024. The squirrels in my backyard wouldn’t stop digging up my new plants, so garden cloches were a feasible solution until I realized how expensive ($45+ each) they could get. I went to Dollar Tree to see if I could DIY some for less and what do you know? Them wire mesh waste baskets started screaming at me. I know, I know! They aren’t as pretty as the antique cloches you see around, but at a fraction of the cost, these will do. All and all, my plants are happy and the squirrels are pissed. #GardeningOnABudget #DIYGarden #GardenHacks #SquirrelProofGarden #FrugalGardening #GardeningTips #BackyardGardening #DollarTreeDIY #GardenSolutions #BudgetFriendlyGardening #DIYHomeAndGarden #GardeningIdeas #SquirrelProblems #Garden
