San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (Basque: Gaztelugatxeko Doniene) is a tiny island on an isthmus, off the coast of Biscay (Bizkai). It is connected to the mainland, near Bakio, by a man-made bridge. On top of the island stands a hermitage, dedicated to San Juan, which dates from the 10th century. Another small island, Aketze, a paradise for marine birds, is close by. The hermitage is accessed by a narrow path, crossing a solid stone bridge, and going up 237 steps.
