Theseus was the mythical founder-king of Athens, son of Aegeus and Poseidon, both of whom Aethra had slept with in one night. He was responsible for the synoikismos, the political unification of Attica under Athens, represented emblematically in his journey of labours, subduing highly localized ogres and monstrous beasts including the Minotaur.
